Meet Your Health Coach

In 2016 I broke my neck.  The doctor said that’d I’d be in a neck brace for a year and likely have to do rehab for another 10.  The prognosis was that I’d never play baseball again and I could never have my kids sit on my shoulder.

I was devastated.  I broke my neck being an idiot.  I was doing calf raises on the smith machine with the barbell a bit too high on my neck.  You know that bone that sticks off the back of your spine and looks like a beak?  The weight of the barbell broke it clean off and took my trap muscles with it.  I went down but – luckily! – the barbell stayed up on the machine.  I couldn’t turn my neck and I could barely life my arms.

Some years ago I had moved away from the US and to South Korea.  Realizing how the Korean diet positively affected me, I had spent the next several years changing my diet.  I was getting stronger, faster, better at baseball, and I wasn’t having the gut issues the American diet gave me. All of that progress was gone in an instant.  Years of growth and development lost in a single action of carelessness and ego.  To make matters worse, I had a 6 mo. old baby girl I could barely hold.

I went into a mental tailspin.  My aspirations were gone.  My brother had come to visit us, so my wife and I were able to have some help around the house, but mentally I was a wreck.  At one point I went out with my brother and some friends.  One of them suggested I get a health coach so that’s exactly what I did.

Together with my new health coach we gradually overhauled everything; my diet, my exercise routine, my raison d’etre.  I thought I was eating fairly healthy, but she taught me that there was so much more I could do to support and aid my recovery.  I learned so much during this process.  I started drinking a lot more water and less alcohol and focused on foods that aid muscle and ligament health.  I stopped exercising and starting training and I learned how to work with my limitations and not in fear of them. Yoga and meditation played huge roles in this transformation as well.

As a result of this hard work, I recovered faster than anyone imagined I would.  I was out of the neck brace in 6 months, half the time the doctor said, and finished rehab about 10 months after that.  I still have limitations.  For instance, I can never have my kids ride on my shoulders and I can never do barbell exercises (not that I want to!), but I can honestly say that I am playing the best baseball of my life and I am faster and stronger now than I was before I broke my neck.  This success has inspired me to be a health coach.

I enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) and took their Health Coach Training Program with the intention of helping people the way my health coach helped me.  After graduation I’ve been helping people overcome injuries and illnesses by building sustainable habits that enhance vitality, expedite recovery, rebuild confidence, and encourage a better overall quality of life.

I hope I can do the same for you!
